Amatlán Portal Hike

Tepoztlán has a reputation as a magical place. People there talk about extraterrestres (aliens), duendes (goblins and fairies), and brujas (witches). It took me a minute to realize that when someone said ‘OO-fo’, it was just a Spanish pronunciation of U.F.O.

Indeed, it’s easy to conjure magical beings in this area, especially in the forests and hills. The small town of Amatlán de Quetzoquatl is not far from Tepoztlán and is rumored to be the birthplace of Quetzoquatl, the Aztec deity. There is a trail leading from town up into the hills, which I am told leads eventually to a waterfall where Quetzoquatl was born. We didn’t make it that far, but also on the path is a rock formation known as a portal or metaphysical power spot where we spent a little time.
