Rich in food, culture, and history, Oaxaca City is a wonderful place to visit. I was in town for 10 days leading up to the Day of the Dead, which is celebrated with great gusto here.
The city is officially known as ‘Oaxaca de Juarez’, named in honor of Benito Juarez, one of the more notable Mexican presidents. Juarez was born into the Zapotec community in this area, and is a significant figure in Mexican history. For English speakers, referring to it as ‘Oaxaca City’ helps distinguish it from the state of Oaxaca.
