I first learned about Ixtapa (pronounced EEKS tapa) as I was researching my visit to Zihuatanejo. It’s a resort community that was planned by the Mexican government in the 1970s, and an interesting contrast to the more traditional vibe of Zihua. I figured I might as well check it out while I was in the area, and ended up spending a very nice week there.
Lodging
The AirBnB I chose was at Monarca Ixtapa, which is a little further down the beach from the main group of hotels. The grounds are beautiful there, and I really enjoyed the beach area. It’s a bit of a walk to get into the center, but there are some nice paths along the road. It was also quick and easy to have them order a taxi, or to hop on one of the colectivos that come by there often.
Groceries
There are some markets and OXXOs in the center, but nothing great. To stock up for the week I ended up getting a taxi and going back to the Soriana Hiper in Zihuatanejo.
Coffee
My favorite hangout for coffee was La Raíz de la Tierra, which is actually a vegan restaurant tucked away in the center. It has a laid back open and airy vibe that I liked. I also went to the Starbucks at the Krystal Ixtapa a couple of times, but they have to let you in at the gate, and it’s pretty plain.
Workouts
Monarca didn’t have a gym, and there wasn’t a good calisthenics park nearby, so luckily there was Gym Palace. They offered a 120 peso (6 usd) day pass, or 400 per week. There are 2 sections, one with machines and one for crossfit, which is open air but shaded. It costs 120 for one or the other, or 170 for both.
I went on a Tuesday around 9:30 am, and the main section was crushed with people, but the crossfit was empty. I just needed a pullup bar and somewhere to stretch, so the crossfit section was a no brainer.
