5 de Diciembre

For me, 5 de Diciembre strikes the best balance of convenience and local charm when I’m in Puerto Vallarta. It’s close to the Malecon, downtown, and beaches, but is less touristy, and it has some good authentic eateries. I also like the proximity to the municipal park, and that I don’t have to go so far to get to a supermarket.

I really enjoyed my AirBnB at Casa Tequila. The terrace had an excellent view, and the staff there was fantastic. Café Mate in the same building is a solid choice for coffee. For groceries, it’s an easy walk to Casa Ley. It took me a few visits before I discovered they have an upper level with all the non-food items.

When it comes to tacos, Tacos El Gato is probably my favorite spot. But don’t miss out on Pepe’s Taco as well. There’s an ongoing debate in town about whether Pepe’s or Pancho’s has the best tacos al pastor. Personally I would give the crown to Pepe’s (for now).

While it may not be my absolute favorite beach in PV, Playa Camarones is a pleasant place for a morning walk, stretching, or spending an afternoon. You can rent umbrellas and chairs right there on the beach. For workouts, head up to the Gimnasio del Aire at the Puerto Vallarta Municipal Park.
