The beach in front of the Playacar development is a little less known and visited than others in Playa del Carmen. I usually try and go over there once or twice a year when I’m in town. I like the late afternoon when there’s a little more shade and around sunset it can be very nice.
This particular trip was on a Tuesday. I set out around 2:30 PM and grabbed a BiciPlaya bike from the station at Avenida 10 and Constituyentes. The ride to Calle 3 Sur is short and straightforward, but you’ll want to stay alert—there can quite a bit of foot traffic and cars crossing the path along the way.
After I got to the BiciPlaya station by the mall, I stopped in for a quick an iced coffee at the Starbucks there. It’s a good spot for a quick break to cool down, and there are also some decent bathrooms downstairs nearby.
From there, I walked through the gate into Playacar, which is a quiet residential area. It’s no problem walking past the gate, I’ve never been stopped or questioned. The walk through Playacar pleasant, and you can also cut through the the Xaman-Ha Mayan park where there some small ruins.
The beach this day was moderately busy but not overcrowded. It was easy to find a spot to sit and relax. It was a bit windy and the waves were pretty busy, so not the most enjoyable for swimming. Still, it was a nice place to spend a couple hours, as the day wound down.
It got really nice around sunset, with clouds and soft colors reflecting on the water. I enjoyed the view for a while, then packed up and headed back the way I came.
Overall a very enjoyable outing. I’d recommend picking a day with less wind if you can, and some water shoes could be handy in certain areas along the beach.
